A police investigation is underway in Central Park Sunday after a woman was found dead with head trauma.
According to police sources, officers from the Central Park Precinct received a 911 call at approximately 9:43 a.m. after a person was found unresponsive inside a wooden gazebo near the Boathouse at East 74th Street and East Drive.
Upon arrival, officers found a woman believed to be in her 60s unconscious and unresponsive with what appeared to be serious head injuries. EMS pronounced her dead at the scene. The victim has not yet been identified.
While police have not officially determined the death to be a homicide, sources familiar with the investigation said the woman suffered multiple stab wounds and may have been homeless and living in the area.
The crime scene was located off the beaten path and obscured by trees. A large tent and articles of clothing could be seen strewn in and around the wooden structure.
NYPD detectives cordoned off the area amid pouring rain and could be seen using flashlights as they examined the scene.
No arrests have been made. The investigation remains ongoing.
