A young woman was killed in the West Village early Sunday morning when a driver struck her and fled the scene in a hit-and-run.

According to police sources, the incident took place at the intersection of West Washington Place and 6th Avenue just before 5 a.m. Cops say a 22-year-old pedestrian was walking westbound on West Washington Place in the south crosswalk, crossing over to 6th Avenue when she was struck by an unidentified gray vehicle.

The force of the collision left her suffering what police described as a severe head injury. A witness dialed 911 and EMS rushed her to Bellevue Hospital, but she could not be saved and was pronounced dead. Her identity is pending proper family notification.

Meanwhile, the unidentified driver raced away northbound on 6th Avenue and then turned westbound to Waverly Place.

No arrests have been made and the incident is being probed by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.
