The Yankees’ starting rotation took another hit on Sunday, placing left-hander Ryan Weathers on the 15-day injured list with a left forearm flexor strain.

Manager Aaron Boone revealed that he will be shut down for two to four weeks, but the hope is that he will be back and contributing to the Yankees’ final push late in the regular season.

“Big picture, obviously, some really good news,” Boone attempted to rationalize. “We’ll try and get this thing calmed down here, and hopefully we’ll be able to get him back in some capacity before the end.”

Weathers himself said that he missed a month of time earlier in his career with the Miami Marlins when he encountered this issue, though that one was more severe than what the Yankees are divulging. The 26-year-old suffered the injury during the fourth inning of Saturday’s loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, uncorking an 0-1 sweeper to Myles Straw that forced him out of the game mid-at-bat.

While inconsistent at times this season, Weathers was smack dab in the middle of the finest stretch of his first year with the Yankees, posting a 1.94 ERA across his previous seven starts. It is yet another significant loss for New York’s rotation, which initially was forced to keep Weathers in the mix when fellow southpaw Max Fried landed on the IL for the second time this year because of an elbow issue last week, just as another lefty, Carlos Rodon, was reactivated following a six-week absence due to elbow inflammation.

The hope is that Fried will miss the minimum 15 days, but Weathers’ issue ensures that Will Warren will continue to stay in the rotation. Both he and Weathers could be demoted to the bullpen this postseason if the starting staff of Rodon, Fried, Gerrit Cole, and Cam Schlittler are fully healthy.
