There’s nothing better than summer hoops.
Friday at Victory Park will only be a testament to that as the eighth annual NYvsNY basketball Tournament wraps up its conclusion, starting with four semifinal games. The event that features some of the best high school hoopers is now down to just four teams on the boys and girls sides as each look to come home with a championship.
The semifinals take place today with the boys and girls championship taking center stage on Saturday.
The basketball tournament was created by Nike in 2017 and has now become a staple of August hoops, bringing out the best talent from the local New York neighborhoods. This year has been much of the same, with Knicks star Jalen Brunson popping out a few times to enjoy the action.
He wasn’t the only one; Liberty’s own Sabrina Ionescu came to see what the fuss was about.
Now, onto the basketball.
Two girls matchups between Watson (The Bronx) and West 4th (Manhattan) open up the action at 4 p.m. West 4th claimed the 2025 championship last year at Victory Park and will look to do so again for the second consecutive season.
Whoever wins will take on either Gersh Park (Brooklyn) or Dykman (Manhattan). The Dykman girls team also made it to the title game last year and will be out for revenge with a chance to come out on top nearly 365 days later.
Now onto the boys game.
Tri-State (Manhattan) and Lincoln Park (Queens) open up the boys doubleheader at 7 p.m. This isn’t out of the ordinary for either team, they both were in the final four last year, so they are used to it. Especially Tri-State, who claimed last year’s title and can do it again with a successful weekend.
Then lastly, it’s Dykman’s boys team taking on Zone 6 (Brooklyn). The winners will return to Victory Park Saturday for a chance at a title. The girls game takes place at 6 p.m. and the boys grace the court at 7:45 p.m.
Prior to the games on Saturday, there will be a Foot Locker newsstand and local creators will have the chance to play in a three-on-on tournament. Not only that, but there will be two middle school games as an appetizer before the two championship games.
