The heaps of pressure that ultimately came off the Mets’ shoulders following a fire sale at the trade deadline is doing the franchise some good, especially for some of its veteran hitters that had been stuck in some nightmarish seasons.
Some of the biggest names that David Stearns was originally relying on when he overhauled the roster last winter have been waking up at the plate, and their contributions have helped fuel a torrid offense that scored a league-leading 42 runs in its last six games entering Monday’s series opener in Atlanta against the Braves.
“It’s been nothing complicated,” interim manager Andy Green said. “Guys are grinding out at-bats. Those types of at-bats set you up to win baseball games, and it’s just good to see everyone fighting and competing during each of their at-bats.”
Star shortstop Francisco Lindor continues to come around after a two-month IL stint derailed his season. He has reached safely in eight of his last 10 games, posting an .806 OPS with two home runs and six RBI during that stretch.
Outfielder Luis Robert Jr. has shown flashes of what he is capable of when healthy since coming off the injured list last month after dealing with a back issue. His last three games have been particularly good, as he is 6-for-his-last-15 with a home run and four RBI.
Second baseman Marcus Semien has an .875 OPS in his last 17 games with five home runs and 12 RBI, though he is still only batting .213 this season. Still, his season OPS has jumped by more than 40 points during this recent hot spell.
Third baseman Bo Bichette had the Mets’ biggest day of all in Sunday’s 11-1 win over the Pirates. He went 5-for-5 with two doubles, a walk, and three RBI. Over his last six games, he is batting .423 with a 1.118 OPS, a home run, three two-baggers, and six RBI. Even more promising is his extended run of good fortune that he is having at the dish. Dating back to June 3 (57 games), he is batting .317 with an .809 OPS, which has helped raise his 2026 stat line to a still-meager .263 and .685 OPS.
“I’ve done some crazy things in my career. Just trying to stay focused on the day-to-day, be the best version of myself, and see where it ends up,” Bichette said about his average. “We have a lot of baseball in front of us. I think it’s in everybody’s interest and desire to play hard, win games, find the best version of themselves, and finish strong.”
