NYCFC midfielder Aiden O’Neill and defender Kai Trewin, both of whom represented Australia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, underwent successful surgeries on their left ankle and right ankle, respectively, the club announced on Wednesday.

With no timetable for a possible return provided, both players will begin rehab immediately. It is unclear when both players picked up these specific injuries, but O’Neill had suffered an ankle injury in early May, roughly one month before the start of the World Cup.

Both NYCFC players helped Australia advance to the Round of 32 at the World Cup, with O’Neill winning Player of the Match honors for his performance during a group-stage game against Paraguay.

He made 11 appearances for NYCFC this season, notching three assists. Trewin, who was signed from Melbourne City FC in January, has made 18 appearances for his new club, scoring one goal and providing two assists.
